Dr. Pete ShaffronPete Shaffron, EdD

Educational Programs

Dr. Pete Shaffron, Professor of Community Medicine, received the doctorate from WVU in 1975, specializing in Industrial Safety Management and Curriculum & Instruction. He earned a master’s degree in Safety Education from West Virginia University, and an EdS degree from Central Missouri State University in Traffic and Industrial Safety. He received his baccalaureate degree from Marshall University. He taught in the West Virginia public school system for five years before joining the WVU faculty.

Dr. Shaffron spearheads a student internship program jointly administered through the WVU Department of Community Medicine and the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Through this program, a graduate student is selected to work with NHTSA in Washington, DC, for one year on a paid stipend. In addition, Dr. Shaffron coordinates the student teacher placements for the undergraduate Health Education teacher certification program. He also sponsors an annual bicycle rodeo for elementary school students and parents to increase helmet use, bicycle safety knowledge, and rider skill.

Dr. Shaffron’s research interests are injury prevention, driver behavior, and the impact of physical fitness upon the older driver. He frequently conducts driver evaluations for clients who are referred by physicians and rehabilitation centers in order to ascertain their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Dr. Shaffron's professional consultations include the Westinghouse Corporation, USX (formerly United States Steel Corporation), Morton Thiokol, the WV Department of Education, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), county boards of education, local high schools, and local rehabilitation centers.
