The Department of Community Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine presents Public Health Grand Rounds on the first Wednesday of each month. The purpose of the grand rounds is to offer all faculty and students an opportunity to hear national public health leaders, faculty from Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and guests from state and local health departments.

Clinical grand rounds are conducted in the medical field where case histories are utilized to demonstrate clinical presentation of diseases. Medical specialists present their point of view on the different aspects of the patient’s status in relation to etiology, diagnosis, treatment protocol and prognosis.

The “patient” in Public Health Grand Rounds is the community and the “status” is a public health concern in the community requiring an intervention. In Public Health Grand Rounds, public health specialists present their views on the different aspects of the “patient’s status.”

The Public Health Grand Rounds will:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the National Public Health Performance Standards Program
  • Include presentations on new and emerging issues in public health
  • Promote a national dialogue on the critical nature of public health infrastructure development
  • Discuss the need for high-quality and well-organized population-based public health services
  • Improve interactions with agencies and practitioners of public health that will be of benefit for the education and field placements of students
  • Host combined grand rounds with the schools of medicine, nursing and pharmacy
  • Offer continuing education opportunities for public health and health services professionals with CEU and CME credits
  • Incorporate workforce-related issues, research and public health practice.
  • Establish department representation on the Health Sciences Center and university-wide distance learning initiatives
  • Broadcast to the other WVU campuses
