Service to the State - Medicine and Public Health Initiative
Mission Statement
The Medicine/Public Health Initiative is devoted to the joining of Medicine and Public Health, the fields that focus respectively on individuals' and population health, in a search to explicate problems and produce innovative solutions to deal with the health needs of the people of the United States.
The Initiative recognizes that to effect a fusion of effort is not a simple task. The initiative brings together leading organizations and individuals concerned about health and health care, to develop an agenda of action that cooperatively engages public health and medicine in reshaping health education, research and practice.

Cooperative Actions for Health Program
Synergy
Synergy is the result when two agents acting together have a greater effect than the simple addition of their individual efforts. In the context of Medicine and Public Health, collaborative efforts between the two professions can have a greater positive impact on the nation’s health than either could achieve separately.
Six collaborative strategies, or "synergies," have been identified to link Medicine and Public Health:
- mproving health care by coordinating services for individuals
- Improving access to care by establishing frameworks to provide care for the uninsured
- Improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of care by applying a population perspective to medical practice
- Using clinical practice to identify and address community health problems
- Strengthening health promotion and health protection by mobilizing community campaigns
- Shaping the future direction of the health system by collaborating around policy, training, and research
