MPH Practicum Course Sequence
MPH Practicum Course Sequence: The practicum course sequence consists of three courses: Practicum Proposal (PUBH 687), Practicum (PUBH 689) and Practicum Report (PUBH 688) for a total of eight credit hours.
The Practicum Proposal course is a two-credit-hour course that provides each student with a structured, faculty-supported process in which to develop a proposal (plan) for a practicum comprising: a) a 300-hour practice- and theory-based practicum experience and b) a data component. The Practicum Committee, comprised of five faculty, reviews proposal development at three separate stages during the semester. Students meet with this committee at each stage and are provided with feedback and direction. In addition, students are encouraged to work closely with their faculty advisors while selecting, developing, implementing and reporting their practicum projects. This process allows the proposal to become a cooperative endeavor between the student and faculty aimed at optimizing the practicum as applied public health.
The Practicum course is a three-credit-hour course that requires the completion of the previously developed public health-oriented practicum encompassing 300 hours of practical and applied theoretical activity.
The Practicum Report course is a two-credit-hour course that provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and professional competencies gained from their MPH coursework, as well as to report the results of their practicum project. It requires the completion of a professional paper (30 – 40 pages) and a professional presentation developed from the student’s practicum project.
