T-25The organization, Best Doctors, has recently published a list of some of the best doctors in the United States. This list included many physicians practicing at WVU as well as alumni. Best Doctors maintains a worldwide database of more than 50,000 top medial specialists, who have been chosen by their peers, and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. Best Doctors was founded in 1989 and is affiliated with Harvard’s Medical School.

Congratulations to the WVU doctors and alumni who are considered the best among their peers.

WVU physicians advise students to get a flu shot. Students can contact Student Health at 304-598-5100 to make an appointment to get the flu shot. UHA and WVUH employees can get their no appointment needed flu shot at employee health located on the second floor of Ruby Memorial Hospital. For more information on the flu shot click here.

Volunteers are needed for Christian Help’s 26th Annual Toy Give-Away at the Armory on the Mileground. The volunteers are needed December 10-12 from 8am-8pm to help sort toys and on December 13 from 8am-4pm to help distribute toys to the families. use in all pediatric trauma patients? A look at a rural trauma center.”

James Boland, M.D.James Boland M.D., Chair, Department
of Surgery, Charleston Division, was honored earlier this year by the State of West Virginia Department of Education
and Arts for 30 years of public service
with the State of West Virginia.
Alan Ducatman, M.D.Alan Ducatman, M.D., Chair, Department of Community Medicine, is featured in a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article on the

T-25Norman Ferrari, M.D.Norman Ferrari, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, has been reappointed by American Board of Pediatric President James Stockman, M.D. to serve another term as a member of the general pediatric certifying examination committee. Dr. Ferrari was first appointed to the Board in 1996, and served as Chair of the examination committee in 2002.
James Helmkamp, Ph.D.James Helmkamp, Ph.D., director
of the West Virginia University Injury Control Research Center, has focused on ATV injuries and accidents for 10 years. His job is to identify the number of deaths occurring in the state and determine the factors that lead to injuries. Click here to read the article.
Ruth Kershner, Ed.D.Ruth Kershner, Ed.D., Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, gave a lecture sponsored by the WVU National Center of Excellence
in Women’s Health last month. The lecture was titled “The Birds and the Bees” and contained information for young girls and their parents about women’s reproductive health. For more information on Dr. Kershner’s lecture click here.
T-25John Linton, Ph.D.John C. Linton, Ph.D., Chair, Department Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, Charleston Division, will
begin a two-year term as president of
the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers, in January.
Jim McJunkin, M.D., Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Charleston Division, is talking about a rare disease transmitted by mosquitoes that is commonly found in West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. This disease can cause several different medical problems and in some cases even death. Click here to read more about the disease.
Jim McJunkin M.D. and Katherine Snyder M.D., Department of Pediatrics, Charleston Division, presented their poster at the American Academy of Pediatrics meeting in October 2007. Their poster was titled " Shaken Baby Syndrome in West Virginia: Incidence, Victim and Perpetrator Profiles from 1999-2005".

has an article featured on www.medicalnewstoday.com called
"New Pharmaco-Economic Data at AAP Regarding Infants at High Risk for RSV Presented by MedImmune".

been elected by the AAMC board to the AAMC Council of Deans Administrative Board until the end of 2008.


Ian Rockett, Ph.D.Ian Rockett, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Community Medicine,
has completed a study on how more suicides could be prevented if U.S.
death certificates were more accurate and complete. He is featured in the medical journal “Injury Prevention”.
T-25James Shumway, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Medical Education, has been elected chair of the Generalists in Medical Education by the AAMC. Dr. Shumway had been serving as chair-elect for the past year.
Several members of the Department of Pediatrics, Charleston Division presented their poster on Gastrointestinal Norovirus Infection Associated with Exacerbation of Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the Annual Conference of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition.

Julian Bailes, M.D., Chair, Department of Neurosurgery and former Chief Neurosurgical Resident Vincent Miele, M.D., performed a computer-assisted video analysis of thousands of rounds to determine predictive factors for fatal
bouts in boxers. Click here to read about this study.
Lan Guo, Ph.D.Lan Guo, Ph.D., Research Assistant, Department of Community Medicine, has helped identify and patent a 35-gene signature to help predict lung cancer recurrence following the surgical

T-25Giovanni Piedimonte, M.D.Giovanni Piedimonte, M.D., Chair, Department of Pediatrics, has been selected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to serve as a member of its Respiratory Integrative Biology and Translational (RIBT) Research Study Section, Center for Scientific Review. Dr. Charles RosenCharles Rosen, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery recently received an RO1 grant from the NIH. Dr. Rosen’s RO1 is for his and Dr. Huber's research on the increased fragility of the blood brain barrier in old animals experiencing stroke.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently awarded the West Virginia Prevention Research Center at West Virginia University a $1.5 million grant to evaluate childhood obesity in West Virginia. The money will fund a two year project to assess the impact of the 2005 West Virginia Healthy Lifestyle Bill and to use these findings to update or modify the state policy. The Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and the West Virginia Prevention Research Center have teamed up to develop new strategies that will help people quit smoking. The Translational Tobacco Reduction Research Program, or T2R2, features a multidisciplinary group of scientists with the common goal of changing West Virginia’s bad habit. Student Happenings
Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer 2007Both Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer are West Virginia natives, active philanthropists in the Morgantown community, and are members of the 2008 Master of Occupational Therapy class. Ms. Mountaineer is Sarah Erwin and Mr. Mountaineer is Timothy Luke Jackson who is also President of the Masters of Occupational Therapy class of 2008. The M.D. Degree Class of 2009’s Charleston Divisions’ students have been making the Charleston community better by working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and participating in a 5K “Pumpkin Race” at Kanawha State Forest.
 
Did You Know?
In 1977, the WVU Medical Center Education Building was dedicated on the Charleston Division campus and training began there for one-third of the MD degree students.
In 2002, the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center Eastern Division received its first group of third-year medical students for the fall semester. This created the WVU School of Medicine’s third clinical experience campus for medical students.
