| MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN |
Earlier this week a team from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) completed its review of the medical educational programs at WVU School of Medicine. At this point, all signs indicate that the site visit went well. However, I would like to stress, that it will be several months before we receive any "official" documentation from the LCME.
Preparation for this site visit was a School wide effort that involved many individuals including students, faculty, and staff. For those that participated in this process, I would like to thank each of you for your contributions. I especially would like to thank Dr. Jamie Shumway and his staff for the outstanding work they did in preparing our school for this visit. I believe our site visitors were pleasantly surprised by our high caliber faculty, students and staff.
The LCME did share with me some of their initial findings listed below:
Areas of strength: our strategic plan; offices of Medical Education and Student Services; highly engaged deans and faculty at all of our campuses; outstanding community service programs; unique rural health programs that promote cultural competency; the "dean-on-call" program; and the new Library/Learning Center.
Areas of partial or substantial noncompliance (meaning we must address these now and in the future): lack of documentation of the full integration of some of our educational competency areas within the curriculum; lack of documentation of the evaluation of some of the student learning objectives within the curriculum; affiliation agreement with WVUH; and the School of Medicine heavy reliance on clinical income (due to the lack of support from other sources) may not be sustainable.
Areas in transition (meaning these should be closely monitored): upcoming reorganization of the curriculum; the rising debt level of graduating students; the future availability of faculty to carry out the education mission; and the impact of the strategic research plan on the traditional departmental organization of the school.
Obviously, the LCME team did recognize many, but not all of our strengths. I am confident that we will effectively address the areas of noncompliance as well as continue to closely monitored and evaluate the areas in transition.
Again, my thanks to all of you for making the WVU School of Medicine a wonderful learning institution, where we continue to cultivate a tradition of excellence in education, research, patient care and service.
-John
