Ruby Memorial Hospital (WVU) is a university hospital with 522 inpatient beds. WVU Emergency Medicine residents work mainly at the Ruby Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, known as the Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center. As a Level 1 Trauma Center with an emergency air transportation system called HealthNet, the ED sees an annual patient volume of 40,000 per year. The pediatric population accounts for 28% of the patient volume each year. The trauma patients accounts for 24% of the ED visits. Approximately 23% of the ED visits are admitted to the hospital, and ICU admissions account for about 5%.
In the second and third year, EM residents rotate through our affiliated hospital United Hospital Center (UHC) in Clarksburg, in order to experience the community emergency department setting. The 286-bed community hospital is located in Clarksburg, WV. Residents are given free housing and meals while working there. The UHC ED sees an annual patient volume of 46,000 per year.
