Department of Emergency Medicine
History of Residency Program
The West Virginia University Department of Emergency Medicine Residency Program was established in 1993. The residency program was conceived in 1984 by the late Dr. Steven Rector, who was the department’s chairman at the time. Through Dr. Rector and other faculty members, the residency program became a reality and accepted its first Emergency Medicine (EM) residents in 1993. The residency program accepts six residents per year in its 3-year residency program. The faculty consists mainly of physicians board-certified in emergency medicine. The program seeks bright, hard-working residents who will not only care but also have compassion for patients.
