Department of Emergency Medicine
About Us
West Virginia University Emergency Medicine is a family of sections working together to provide comprehensive emergency care to the people of West Virginia.
The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) is the administrative and academic department of Emergency Medicine at the WVU School of Medicine. DEM is the home base for our 3 year Residency program. Our program is accredited through September 2008, and we were recently approved by ABEM to have our compliment of residents increased to 7 per year. We are on track to have a full compliment of 21 residents in 2007. DEM also houses the administrative offices of our teaching faculty and staff. DEM is where physician assistant and medical students get information about shadowing and rotating, and where our residents practice their classroom teaching skills, get started on their research projects and come for regularly held educational conferences. It is located on the 7th floor of the Health Sciences Center.
The WVUH Emergency Department (ED) is home to the John Michael Moore Trauma Center, northern West Virginia's Level I trauma center. The ED is the primary stroke center in northern WV, and has approximately 40,000 visits per year. The ED houses medical command for the region, and is home base for Health Net I which serves a 75 mile radius around Morgantown, including border counties of neighboring states. The ED is also the primary training ground for our Emergency Medicine Residents.
The Center For Rural Emergency Medicine (CREM) is our sister department. Working through training, research and outreach, CREM strives to improve health, safety and injury prevention in rural populations. CREM offers educational opportunities like First Aid & CPR, BTLS, ACLS, PEPP, PALS and many other courses offered to communities and healthcare providers. We are glad to have a partnership with such a valuable resource.
