Service To The State

Departmental Service

The West Virginia University Department of Emergency Medicine provides service to the state of West Virginia in many respects. On a clinical level, the department provides online Medical Command to more than twenty counties in northern West Virginia. The online Medical Command involves medical directions to pre-hospital personnel who need advice in patient care management. We have provided this service since the departments inception. This Medical Command is also provided to Health Net I which is the aero-medical service provided to residents in the state of WV, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland. HealthNet I will provide this care to individuals within a 150 mile radius of the institution.

The Department of Emergency Medicine also provides service to the state through specific individuals within the department.

Individual Service

Dr. Chuck Whiteman is the President of the West Virginia Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In this capacity, Dr. Whiteman provides direction and leadership into the future of Emergency Medical Services within the state of West Virginia. The department also has several other individuals who are active participants within the West Virginia Chapter of ACEP.

Dr. Bill Rose provides service to the state of West Virginia through his role as Medical Director of a federal HRSA grant to WV DHHR- Division of Threat Preparedness in Charleston. This group provides strategic planning for hospital preparedness in the event of a bioterrorism, WMD, or natural disaster.

Dr. Todd Crocco also provides service to the state of WV through a planning grant to develop a statewide stroke system of care. This project has been requested at the discretion of the Governor for the state of WV. Through his work with other departments and other institutions within the state of WV the goal is to improve the stroke care delivered to its citizens and ultimately achieve improved outcomes of its stroke victims.

Dr. Crocco and Stephen Davis are members of the state Cardiovascular Healthcare Advisory Council, which is currently drafting a strategic plan to improve cardiovascular health for all West Virginians.

Mr. Davis is a current member of the West Virginia University Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects, which reviews all research activities conducted by WVU researchers throughout the state to ensure that the rights of West Virginia participants are upheld and protected.
