Division of Exercise Physiology

Research Requirements

Because the Doctorate is a research degree, students will be expected to be involved in research from the beginning of their programs . When each doctoral student enters the Exercise Physiology program, the ongoing research projects in the division will be explained by the principal investigator(s) and the student will be expected to participate in one or more of those projects. The student will then be directed by their Ph.D. mentor to a specific project that will lead to collection of pilot data for their dissertation.

Students will collect pilot data leading to their dissertation project over their second year of enrollment (first year in the program of Exercise Physiology). They should complete enough research to write abstracts to present at least one national meeting, and a research proposal by the end of their second year of enrollment in the Ph.D. program (i.e., the end of the first year in the Exercise Physiology program).

Students will be expected to be heavily involved in research throughout the doctoral program with a goal of having at least one manuscript published or in preparation prior to beginning their dissertation research (by the end of the first year in Exercise Physiology (which is the end of the second year of the Ph.D. program). Students will expect to have written and submitted a minimum of three first authored publications from work in their mentor's laboratory prior to graduation (including manuscripts that will become part of their dissertation).
