Building on a Dream

Building on a Dream The West Virginia University Eye Institute is the realization of a dream to provide every person in West Virginia with the very best eye care, no matter how difficult or serious the problem might be. The new Institute will also provide new opportunities for research and education in ophthalmology, assuring that the latest treatments and surgery will always be available. This center of excellence will build upon WVU Ophthalmology's existing reputation in West Virginia, the United States, and the world.

Funding and support for construction of the Center's structure is a collaborative effort by West Virginia University Hospitals, University Health Associates, and the WVU School of Medicine. Located next to the Physician's Office Center (POC) at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, the $5 million facility houses clinics for patient care, diagnostic testing, and laser treatments, as well as laboratories and offices. Private support is required to furnish the Center and provide specialized equipment for examination rooms, laboratories, and classrooms.

Winning Team

An eye institute is far more than the bricks and mortar used to construct it--more even than the expert physicians who provide services there. It requires a team of teachers, scientists and staff with the passion to take on challenges. Fortunately, that part of the West Virginia Eye Institute’s "foundation" already exists.

The faculty of West Virginia University’s Department of Ophthalmology includes every major subspeciality in ophthalmology. This community of doctors, researchers, and support staff have the expertise, experience, and demonstrated ability to keep pace with change.
