Message from the Chair

The Mission of the West Virginia University Eye Institute is to restore vision and prevent blindness by providing state-of-the-art medical and surgical eye care, finding new treatments through research, providing education for everyone involved in eye care, rehabilitation for those who have lost vision and providing community outreach to identify and treat those with eye diseases.

The department is fortunate to be located in a fully equipped modern facility constructed in 2001. The Institute is conveniently located adjacent to West Virginia University Hospitals which facilitates the delivery of care for patients who also need surgery, radiological, or laboratory services. In addition to patient care areas, the Institute is complete with research space, library, auditorium, practice surgery lab, and employee wellness area.

The residency program is fully accredited and consists of a complement of nine residents. The program was given the maximum allowed length of continued full accreditation at the 2007 ACGME review. The department is one of few in the nation to have an ophthalmic surgery simulator on site to promote development of surgical skills. The majority of the residents’ educational experience is at the home institution, and approximately 20% of their experience is at the regional Veterans Administration Hospital. Two fellowship programs are offered: one in retina and other in oculoplastic surgery are also offered.

All the subspecialties are covered by full time faculty. In addition, four full time research faculty members round out the faculty complement. The department is active in both basic and clinical funded research activity.
