Physician Profiles

Judie F. CharltonJudie F. Charlton, M.D. is chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the Glaucoma Service.  Dr. Charlton's career has been dedicated to service of the West Virginia University. After completing pharmacy school, medical school, and ophthalmology residency at West Virginia University, she joined the faculty.  Early in her career, she served as medical director of the eye clinic and was elected chief of staff of the hospital.  She also served on the board of directors of the West Virginia University Hospitals and the first board of the West Virginia United Health Systems.

While serving clinically and in an administrative capacity, Dr. Charlton pursued research in the areas of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, glaucoma and disability from visual field impairment.  In addition to several funded studies and publications, she was awarded patents for her Urea Ophthalmic Topical formulations. 

After several years of clinical administrative work, Dr. Charlton changed her emphasis to residency education.  She served as residency program director, and her work in this area was recognized nationally. She was selected to serve for six years on the national Residency Review Committee for Ophthalmology, a nine member committee, that determines the accreditation status of all U.S. ophthalmology residency programs, as well as, accreditation criteria.  She was selected as the WVU School of Medicine Distinguished Teacher and received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Clinical Service.

Dr. Charlton received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in 2005 in recognition of her commitment to service, education, and research.  Dr. Charlton's career took another pendulum swing when for the second time in 20 years she agreed to repeat her roles as residency program director, medical director, and hospital chief of staff a second time.
