Lionel D. Chisholm, M.D., FRCS (C)Lionel D. Chisholm, M.D., FRCS (C) is director of the Retina and Vitreous Disease Service and Vice Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Chisholm earned his medical degree and completed an ophthalmology residency from the University of Toronto. He completed a fellowship in Diseases and Surgery of the Retina with Charles Schepens, MD at the Retina Foundation and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.

Before coming to West Virginia University in 1993, Dr. Chisholm was a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto and Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at The Toronto Hospital. In this position he coordinated the merging of two major ophthalmology training programs and supervised the transition of the Department of Ophthalmology from an inpatient service to a major ambulatory service. As one of the founders of the Eye Research Institute of Canada, he has conducted research on diabetic retinopathy, the scanning laser ophthalmoscope, vitreous substitutes, anesthesia during surgery, and medical therapy following surgery.

In addition to his clinical and administrative responsibilities at West Virginia University, Dr. Chisholm is working to improve diabetic eye care in West Virginia.
