Anthony D. Realini, M.D.Anthony D. Realini, M.D. is a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist and is an associate professor of ophthalmology at West Virginia University. Dr. Realini specializes in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, including medical, laser and surgical treatments. He has a particular interest in new technologies that improve our ability to diagnose and treat glaucoma. The glaucoma service at the West Virginia University Eye Institute features many state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, including novel methods of assessing intraocular pressure more accurately and innovative treatments such as selective laser trabeculoplasty.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Realini also runs an active clinical research program at the Eye Institute. His research interests include new technologies, genetics, and the variation of eye pressure over time. His research laboratory is actively evaluating new tonometers that may more accurately measure eye pressure and novel devices that may enhance our ability to diagnose glaucoma earlier than ever before. In collaboration with Sepi Zareparis, PhD, a research scientist in the Eye Institute, Dr. Realini is participating in a study to identify the genes associated with glaucoma in West Virginians. In addition, Dr. Realini is the principal investigator of an ongoing study of eye pressure variation funded by the National Eye Institute at the National Institutes of Health. He is also the principal investigator of several ongoing studies funded by various pharmaceutical companies to evaluate new treatments for glaucoma, some of which are not yet available to the general public.
