A Day in the Life of a WVU
Eye Institute Resident
|

Emmanuel Kai-Lewis
|
 |
5:30 AM
Wakes up in his home and starts the day with a strong cup of coffee. He enjoys watching CNN while getting ready for the day.
 |
What was your deciding factor to come to WVU Eye Institute versus other offers?
I was impressed with the faculty and it seemed like a fun place to work and learn over the next few years. |
|
6:45 AM
Leaves for a full day as an WVU Ophthalmology resident.
7:00 AM
Each work day begins with morning lectures with all of the residents and various faculty discussing eye diseases.
7:30 AM
He makes his way to clinic, surgery, or to our local Veterans Administration on a rotating basis.
11:00 AM
If not in surgery or at the VA, he is examining patients.
 |
How many patients do you see on a typical day?
I typically see 15-20 patients a day. While in surgery my patient load varies, I enjoy all aspects of the residency program here. I enjoy the rotation aspect of my schedule throughout the year. |
|
12:00 (Lunch)
Eats with the other residents and fellows 90% of the time. He receives a small stipend for meals that he can use. He prefers to eat in the residents' room at his desk. He feels this is a great time to multi-task with emails, patient charts, and ask questions in reference to cases.
1:00 PM
He returns to his schedule and continues seeing patients and working with various faculty.
4:30 PM
Typically his day usually ends and he returns home unless he is on call, which occurs every third night of the week.
5:00 PM
Arrives at home to eat, exercise, and relax a bit. He enjoys hanging out and spending time with his family. During this time his wife can get things done.
6:00 PM
He does try to make some time to get outside and get a good workout in before he begins to study and read for the next day.
2nd Year Ophthalmology Resident
Emmanual Kai-Lewis's favorite saying is, "The sky is the limit." If you told me 10 years ago I would be an Ophthalmology resident, I would have said, "I'll be just like my dad."
While growing up my father was an Ophthalmologist and I thought what a cool job. |
