Department of Family Medicine
The official definition of "Family Medicine" as adopted by our governing institution, the American Board of Family Medicine is as follows:
"Family Medicine is the medical specialty which is concerned with the total health care of the individual and the family. It is the specialty of breadth which integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine is not limited by age, sex, organ system, or disease entity."
Family physicians possess unique attitudes, skills, and knowledge which qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral, or social. These specialists, because of their background and interactions with the family, are best qualified to serve as each patient's advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources. - American Academy of Family Physicians.

What we are about is caring for individuals as people with needs that require psychosocial/social skills. Our attention is unrestrictive with regard to age, gender, or organ system. Our focus is in disease prevention of healthy individuals; however, our knowledge of diseases and their treatment (especially those encountered in an ambulatory setting) requires accurate and up-to-date medical knowledge.
We are caring physicians with the knowledge of how to express that caring effectively.
