WVU Family Medicine Resident Curriculum

Cardiac Care Unit, CCU

General: Family Medicine residents rotate for one month in the cardiac care unit.  Volume is usually fairly high, but so is turnover, so numbers are generally steady. Exposure to common and critical care cardiology cases is excellent, and seniors on the service encourage a team approach to facilitate a smooth running service.
Call: The call schedule is usually one-in-four nights. Interns have back-up by cardiology fellows, but are responsible for initial work-up of patients to be admitted, with the exception of patients suspected of suffering myocardial infarction, who will go straight to the cardiac catheterization lab.
Patient Load: Call nights can increase a resident's patient load by as many as ten or more, but with high turnover, numbers average in the four to six range.
Other Learners: An attending, a cardiology fellow, an internal medicine senior resident and two or three interns make-up the cardiology team. In addition, sub-interns occasionally rotate through the service, and third-year medical students also take an active role in patient care.
Supervision: The team leader is the cardiology fellow, but the senior residents are also very knowledgeable and helpful. The attending provides the ultimate decision-making and is readily available for all team concerns.
