WVU Family Medicine Resident Curriculum

Newborn Nursery

General: Nurse practitioners coordinate patient care in the pediatric nursery.  They are extremely  knowledgeable and helpful, so the service runs smoothly and is a pleasant experience. Daily rounds with a Neonatologist, senior pediatric resident, and other NICU residents offers teaching and daily decision-making.
Call: The schedule is usually one-in-four to one-in-five nights. Interns cover the NICU, with nurse practitioner and pediatrics senior resident back-up.
Patient Load: The numbers can vary from one or two per intern to ten or more per intern, even overnight.
Other Learners: One or two interns usually cover the newborn nursery service. A pediatric or medicine / pediatric combined intern will usually be teamed with the family medicine intern
Supervision: The nurse practitioner in the newborn nursery supervises daily patient care. Rounds with the neonatologist occasionally yield a change in plans.
