Department of Family Medicine
WVU Family Medicine Resident Curriculum
Family Medicine Orientation
| General: |
This first month of residency training is dedicated to the philosophy of family medicine and oriented toward our clinic and department. Special activities include procedural workshops in suturing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, nasopharyngoscopy, and colposcopy; the ALSO course; a very popular ROPES course for team building skills; and social activities such as the departmental picnic. A lecture series on topics basic to family medicine is interspersed with these activities, as well as time in the clinic, the hospital service, the county health department, and various community activities. The entire experience is a gentle introduction to the department, the people, the discipline of family medicine, and the way our medical center operates. All of the new PGY1s were strongly positive about this month. |
| Call: |
Interns are scheduled to cover call with the family medicine resident on the night float service one to two times during the month. |

| Other Learners: |
Upper level family medicine residents, the occasional off-service resident, and third year medical students share in the learning experience. |
| Supervision: |
Supervision is by the family medicine faculty in clinic and by faculty and supervising upper level family medicine residents when on the hospital service. |
