WVU Family Medicine Resident Curriculum

Surgery at WVU and Martinsburg

General: Two surgery rotations are required during the family medicine residency: one month on the WVU surgery service, and the other at the VA hospital in Martinsburg, WV (about 2 1/2 hours east of Morgantown.)
Call: Call is usually one-in-three or one-in-four, depending on the number of residents on the service. Call involves participation in evaluation and stabilization of trauma patients at WVU's Level 1 trauma center.  While rotating at the VA hospital in Martinsburg, residents do not take call.
Patient Load: Numbers vary between one to five patients per resident. Occasionally numbers get high, but turnover is also usually high.
Other Learners: Teams consist of an attending, a chief resident, one upper level surgery resident, and interns (Surgery, Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine). Sub-interns and third-year medical students participate in patient care as well.
Supervision: Most daily decisions are coordinated by the chief and upper level residents. Attendings share patient care responsibilities, but are usually found in the O.R. In Martinsburg, interaction with attendings is one-on-one.
