Department of Family Medicine
Application Requirements
West Virginia University's Family Medicine Residency Program participaties in ERAS-Electronic Residency Application Service-from the Association of American Medical Colleges. Please check the ERAS home page for further details.
Foreign Medical graduates will need to contact the ECFMG for application and eligibility.
We accept applications only through ERAS. Additionally, only those applications with all required documents will be reveiwed.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Recent graduation from an accredited medical school. If applicant is not a recent graduate, the applicant must be able to demonstrate clinical practice or experience since medical school graduation. (Recent is considered within five (5) years)
- Applications must be submitted by November 30th.
- Completion of the following documentation:
- Common application form
- Medical School Transcripts
- Dean's Letter
- 3 Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement
- Curriculum Vitae
- USMLE or Comlex Transcript (Minimum 2 digit score of 80 or above, two attempts to pass any part of USMLE)
- ECFMG certification for Foreign Medical Graduates. Only those applications with valid ECFMG certification will be reviewed.
- Pass Clinical Skills Examination on the first attempt.
- If you are not a citizen of the United States, you must have a valid J-1 Visa or Greencard. West Virginia University School of Medicine will only sponsor the J-1 Visa.
- When eligible for licensure, the applicant must meet all of the requirements for licensure in the state of West Virginia. Applicants may review the Medical Practice Act and Rules on the West Virginia Board of Medicine website at www.wvdhhr.org/wvbom
Application Process:
- When the application is received through ERAS, it will be reviewed by the residency coordinator and the director of the residency.
- Complete applications (applications containing all of the required documentation) that fulfill the eligibility criteria will be forwarded to the Family Medicine Residency Education Committee for review and considerations. The committee will decide to offer interviews to individual applicants based on the following....
- Eligibilty criteria
- Letters of recommendations
- Suitability for Family Medicine
- Previous experience and exposure to Family Medicine
- Suitability for rural medicine
- Familiarity with West Virginia or Appilacian regions.
- Academic performance in medical school
- Previous experience in graduate medical education programs.
- Incomplete applications will be placed on hold until the proper documentation is received through the ERAS program.
