Established in 1973, our ACGME fully accredited Residency Program combines the flavor of a busy community practice with the innovations and educational resources of a major university medical center. In many ways, it is truly the best of both worlds. Our goal is to provide professional guidance and growth in a flexible and nurturing atmosphere. Our program is also certified with the AOA, which allows us to incorporate Osteopathic Residents and Faculty in our program. We understand that each resident is unique and we strive to meet individual needs by enhancing talents and developing skills. Our desire is to personally facilitate the development of a physician who is broadly trained, competent, confident, and well balanced.
A resident to faculty ratio of 2:1 promotes close association with skilled and experienced clinicians within Family Medicine. Our faculty members have widely ranging interests that include women’s health, family-centered obstetrics, geriatrics, sports medicine, preventive medicine, computer applications to medicine, and children’s health. Although the focus of training centers on our own in-patient hospital service and outpatient clinic, residents also benefit from the expertise of other medical school faculty. Colleagues from all of the major specialties and subspecialties contribute in a direct way to the growth and education of our residents throughout the three-year program.
The centerpiece of learning is our 30,000 square feet state-of-the-art Clark K. Sleeth Family Medicine Center. This freestanding clinic serves the greater Morgantown community. Here, in a bright and refreshing environment, patient care, education, service, and research are combined with technology to produce the best in quality health care. Other venues for learning include the 376-bed Ruby Memorial Hospital, the Chestnut Ridge Mental Health Center and Hospital, and Sundale Nursing Home. The Family Medicine Center serves as the laboratory for students and residents to learn the principles of Family Medicine and primary care.
Flexible scheduling and an innovative outreach program link residents with other practicing physicians throughout the State of West Virginia. Our rural rotations allow residents to develop skills in the areas of community medicine as well as to explore potential practice sites. To assist in the transition to “real world practice”, our residency has developed an integrated didactic and web-based practice management curriculum. This curriculum is augmented by a senior rotation in The Management of Health Systems, that is tailored to the individual practice needs of the graduating resident.
Our residents are true partners in the educational experience. As life-long learners, they are called upon to teach not only each other, but junior residents, medical students, and patients as well. Our chief residents are responsible for the weekly noontime lecture series. In addition, our residents participate actively with our faculty in the ongoing process of curriculum development and clinical management.
The strength of our program is measured by the success of our graduates. Our first time pass rate on the Family Practice Board Certification Examination is an impressive 99%. Our graduates are well trained and have sought out a variety of career options including solo/group practice, urgent care/emergency care, fellowships, academic family medicine, and rural health clinic practice.
Challenge, balance, growth, flexibility. These are the key advantages our program has to offer.
