Visiting Clinicians

The Visiting Clinician Program was initiated in 1990, with support from the WVU School of Medicine, West Virginia University Hospitals, University Health Associates, and various grants. In the first year, only family physicians were recruited. As interest grew, the program was expanded to include physicians in pediatrics, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Potential Visiting Clinicians are identified based on their credentials and their standing in the communities they serve. They are interviewed to gain a better idea of the physicians and dentists interests and needs, and to discuss ways he or she might contribute to the program at West Virginia University.

The Visiting Clinician Program was designed to address the needs of rural primary care physicians. Physicians participating in the program are granted a clinical faculty appointment in the designated departments and visit the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center campus to learn, teach, and receive CME.

In 1992 the WVU School of Dentistry began participating in the Visiting Clinician Program. The Dental Visiting Clinicians visit the Health Sciences Center to learn, teach, and receive CDE.
