Behavioral Studies
Most of our studies have focused on significant health problems within West Virginia including heart disease, diabetes, and weight concerns. We have utilized a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach for our studies, working closely with local professionals and organizations in many rural communities. Our intervention research has emphasized tailoring best practice interventions to the local culture in order to enhance the health promotion activities of community members. Interventions have been developed to improve the diet and physical activity practices of families and to increase participation in health screenings. Research partners have included Head Start, the WV Public School, the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnership (WVRHEP), the Prevention Research Center, and the Coronary Artery Risk Detection in Appalachian Communities (CARDIAC) Project.
Clinical Trials
APM Research (now the Health Research Center) began in 1988. While many of the early studies focused on nicotine dependence, our research over the past several years has been in the areas of psychiatric disorders, depression, generalized anxiety, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, eating disorders, heart disease and diabetes. We have a well-trained research staff and standard protocols for assessing baseline characteristics, treatment adherence and treatment outcomes. To date, we have enrolled more that 5,000 subjects in more than 40 clinical trials.
