Nephrology Fellowship Program

The Fellowship in Nephrology is of two years duration. West Virginia University provides extensive training in clinical Nephrology and Research.

Nephrology Fellowship Educational Responsibilities


The Nephrology Fellow is responsible for overseeing the care of all patients on the nephrology inpatient and consultation service. The Fellow is responsible for assigning new patient admissions and consultations to the internal medicine resident rotating on the nephrology service.

Nephrology Facilities

The major sites for clinical activities are the West Virginia University Hospitals, (Ruby Memorial Hospital), the Physicians Office Center located next to Ruby Memorial, the Elkins CKD Clinic and Dialysis Center located in Elkins, WV, the Fairmont CKD Clinic and Dialysis Center located in Fairmont, WV and the Westover Dialysis Center located in Westover, WV.

Fellows rotate at the UPMC Shadyside hospitall in Pittsburgh, PA. to maximize exposure to the management of newly transplanted patients and to follow-up transplant patients.

The Nephrology faculty and fellows represent a very accessible resource in clinical medicine, teaching, scientific knowledge and basic and applied research. There are currently 6 full time faculty and an active fellowship program with 4 fellows.

Fellows see outpatients with a wide variety of nephrology problems, including patients pre- and post-renal transplant. While some patients receive transplants at other institutions, the majority return to our clinics for their long-term post-transplant care. The fellow typically sees one to three new patients and four to eight follow-up patients during each clinic.
