The Stroke Center
When you are having a stroke, getting to the hospital in a hurry can make all the difference. Treatments are available that can stop a stroke while it is happening or drastically reduce the amount of damage it causes. The Stroke Center at WVU has an emergency response team available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to evaluate your stroke and perform the appropriate treatment in time to minimize damage.
Know the symptoms of stroke. You must not delay in seeking emergency care. The WVU Stroke Center coordinates with regional emergency service providers to make sure your treatment begins as soon as the ambulance arrives. If you are experiencing the following symptoms, call 911 immediately:
- sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg - especially along one side of the body
- sudden confusion
- sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye
- sudden difficulty speaking or trouble understanding speech
- sudden severe headache with no known cause
Types of Treatment
The WVU Stroke Team includes specialists from the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, radiology and emergency medicine. The newest drug therapies and state-of-the-art technologies are offered to provide timely treatment of stroke, in order to minimize permanent damage. Prevention and rehabilitation services are also offered.

Diagnosis and treatment of stroke is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists through WVU Hospitals.

David Libell, MD
Dr. Libell is certified in Neurology and is the director of the WVU Stroke Center. Dr. Libell's special interests are stroke and neuromuscular diseases. |

Julian Bailes, MD
Dr. Bailes is board certified in neurosurgery. His specialty areas are cerebrovascular surgery, sports injuries and telemedicine.

Ann Chinnis, MD
Dr. Chinnis is board certified in emergency medicine. Her specialty areas are emergency medicine and health administration |

Kumar Pillai, MD
Dr. Pillai is a vascular surgeon. He has particular expertise in carotid surgery under regional anesthesia. He is board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery and surgical critical care. |

Claudette Brooks, MD
Dr. Brooks is a neurologist with special training in stroke. She has expertise in primary and secondary stroke prevention. |

Patient Location
Call 911 immediately for emergency assistance if you believe you or someone with you may be having a stroke. Your local emergency service provider will assist you in getting to the most appropriate care setting. WVU's Stroke Team evaluates and treats patients from throughout the region in the Emergency Department at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Preventative and rehabilitative services are provided in the Neurology Clinic in the Physicians Office Center for patients who are at risk for stroke or who have had a stroke.
