Department of Neurosurgery

The WVU Department of Neurosurgery provides state-of-the-art care to adults and children with disorders of the brain, carotid and vertebral arteries, pituitary gland, spine and spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves, and autonomic nervous system. Our faculty includes highly trained, highly skilled surgeons at the forefront of the development and practice of new techniques in neurosurgery.

State-of-the-art imaging equipment enables surgeons to diagnose and treat problems with a high degree of accuracy. This equipment includes a PET scanner, a 3-Tesla MRI, twice as powerful as former MRIs, and a new Panorama Open MRI. New software allows for the fusion of CT and PET scans to create much more complete and accurate images. Other equipment includes a surgical aspirator and an 80-watt laser. The Gamma Knife -- which provides extremely accurate targeting and treatment of brain cancers in a one-day treatment – enhances our ability to provide state-of-the-art, minimally invasive care.

With the establishment of the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, a joint venture between WVU and Johns Hopkins University, WVU is becoming a national center of excellence in neurosciences research. Our neurosurgeons’ collaboration with other researchers strengthens both our patient care mission and the research program.
