Julian E. Bailes, M.D.
Dr. Julian Bailes, department chairman, is a specialist in cerebrovascular surgery, sports injuries and telemedicine. His research includes a study sponsored by the National Football League Players Association on head injuries among professional football players; team physicians frequently consult him for his expertise in this area. Dr. Bailes received his medical degree from Louisiana State University and completed his residency and advanced training at Northwestern University in Chicago and the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. He led the cerebrovascular surgery program at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1988 to 1997. |

Warren W. Boling, Jr., M.D.
A specialist in the surgical treatment of epilepsy, Dr. Warren Boling joined WVU's Department of Neurosurgery in December 2001. He received his M.D. degree from Texas Tech University and completed his advanced training in neurosurgery at the University of Kentucky, and fellowships in epilepsy surgery at McGill University in Canada and the University of Melbourne in Australia. He comes to WVU from the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute in Montreal, Quebec, attracted by the opportunity to work with other WVU specialists to improve care for people with epilepsy.

John J. Collins, M.D.
Dr. John J. Collins is a board certified neurosurgeon with an additional subspecialty board certification in pediatric neurosurgery. He is an active member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. Dr. Collins earned his bachelor's degree at Duke University and his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciencesin Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his neurosurgeical residency training at the National Naval Medical Center, followed by a neurosurgical fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. He received fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at the University of Utah's Primary Children's Medical Center. |

Takanori Fukushima, M.D.
Dr. Takanori Fukushima is an internationally renowned pioneer in microsurgery, skull-base surgery and minimally invasive neurosurgery. He also specializes in transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, acoustic neuromas and cerebral aneurysms, and has developed many new techniques and surgical instruments. Dr. Fukushima received his medical degree from the University of Tokyo, and completed advanced training at the University of Tokyo, the Free University of Berlin, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Todd Harshbarger, MD
Dr. Todd Harshbarger treats patients with simple and complex diseases of the spine and neck and also provides a broad spectrum of care for patients with cerebrovascular diseases, cranial and skull-based tumors, and functional brain disorders.
Dr. Harshbarger earned his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School and completed advanced training at Stanford, Emory University and West Virginia University. He is a former staff physician and field surgeon for the U.S. Army.

Terrence D. Julien , M.D.
Dr. Julien is a surgical neuro-oncologist, a neurosurgeon who diagnoses and treats patients who have tumors of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. He is also experienced in radiosurgery, a procedure which uses radiation to treat tumors, facial pain, and other functional brain disorders. He also has advanced training in molecular neuro-oncology, spinal column metastasis and complex spine surgery. His specialty interests include Brain Tumors, Computer-Assisted Image-Guided Neurosurgery, and Radiosurgery. His spinal surgery interests are in cervical spine disorders (particular cervical disc disease, spondylosis, and myelopathy), spine tumors, and minimally invasive spine procedures (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar).
Dr. Julien joins WVU from Togus VA Medical Center in Maine. He earned his medical degree from Howard University. He completed specialty training at the New York University Medical Center and at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. Dr. Julien is working on novel techniques to treat malignant primary and metastatic brain tumors through immunotherapy, radiosensitizers and by using nanotechnology. |

Bengt Karlsson, M.D., Ph.D.
Bengt Karlsson is an internationally renowned specialist in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. Dr. Karlsson, of Sweden, has over 16 years experience with the instrument and has worked on more than 2,000 cases. He served as head of the Gamma Knife Center at Goethe University Frankfurt in Frankfurt, Germany, before coming to WVU. His Gamma Knife training began in 1987 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he served as co-director of the Gamma Knife Center. Dr. Karlsson has been extensively published and is a visiting consultant at hospitals and institutions in the U.S., Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Korea, Taiwan, and Germany. |

Nicci R. McFadden, S.A., PA-C
Clinical instructor in neurosurgery and senior surgical physician assistant. He has completed training at the Community College of Allegheny College, Penn State University, and West Virginia University. He is Board Certified in Medicine and Surgery. His specialties include cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, and ophthalmology. His interests are cerebrovascular disorders and spinal diseases. |

G. Robert Nugent, M.D.
Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department, Dr. Nugent is internationally known for his treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. He travels extensively to teach his techniques for trigeminal neuralgia and neurosurgical treatment of pain. |

Charles L. Rosen, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Charles L. Rosen directs the research program for the department and is a specialist in cranial base surgery. He also has advanced training in neuro-oncology, spinal cord tumors, pediatric neurosurgery, and complex spine surgery. He received his medical degree and Ph.D. from New York University and advanced training in neurosurgery at George Washington University. Dr. Rosen is studying a new combination of drugs to improve the outcome of patients who have had a stroke. He is also developing new ways to diagnose and treat brain tumors and injuries from trauma.

Joseph L. Voelker, M.D.
Dr. Joseph L. Voelker has had many years of experience in a wide range of neurosurgical disorders and procedures, but he is a specialist in the neurosurgical treatment of aneurysms and AVMs, pituitary tumors, and acoustic neurinoma. He received his medical degree from Indiana University and completed his advanced residency training at Indiana University and the University of Western Ontario. |
