Letter from the Program Director

Welcome. Thank you for your interest in our program!

Our goal is to train outstanding neurosurgeons with the knowledge and experience to provide the highest quality of care, and to help advance the knowledge base upon which the practice of neurosurgery depends. Our department first started training residents in 1966, establishing a very strong tradition of training physicians to be outstanding neurosurgeons. We are quite proud of the many accomplished physicians in both academic and private practice who have trained or worked here at West Virginia University.

The neurosurgery program at West Virginia University is based upon the concept of both a broad and rigorous exposure to all the subspecialties of neurosurgery. The faculty at West Virginia University are diverse with respect to their own training and experiences. This translates to the residents being exposed to a broad range of options and expertise in the management of neurosurgical disease. The neurosurgery residents obtain all their clinical experience at our University Hospital. Surgical training is maximized without needless time away from family and unnecessary travel between hospitals. As the largest provider of neurosurgical care in the region, our residents are exposed to all aspects of neurosurgical disease. Our seven year training program also allows for ample time to pursue independent study in the neurosciences as well as opportunity for more focused clinical experience in subspecialty areas of interest.

Finally, Morgantown WV is a beautiful college town located in the mountains of WV. We are fortunate to have access to many recrerational areas, a low cost of living, and low crime rates; yet are still within easy access of both Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. This environment thus translates into an ideal place for the excepional graduating medical student to receive training in neurosurgery. We look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Charles L. Rosen, MD, PhD
