Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Maternal Fetal Medicine
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at West Virginia University provides full perinatal, genetics and ultrasound services. Our hospital receives over 350 maternal transports yearly, and more than 100 additional high-risk patients receive ambulatory care through our outpatient services. The division is strongly committed to providing care from a team approach, with resident physicians in training working closely with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist. Our team includes a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Director, a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist, Certified Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner with an additional certification in High-Risk Perinatal Nursing, High-Risk Perinatal Nurse Coordinator, a Genetics Counselor, and three Registered Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonographers.
Perinatal genetic services include targeted ultrasound and genetic amniocentesis. An onsite cytogenetics laboratory supports our division. Research is strongly supported by West Virginia University, and research interests within our department include public health, preventative care, perinatal genetics and medical complications of pregnancy.
The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine has an extensive outreach program supporting consultative obstetrical services to over 20 hospitals in the region. These outreach centers provide a broad referral and transport population to our hospital and outpatient services. Patients from the tri-state referral area are a diverse population with interesting pathology and provide a challenging clinical experience for our residents.
