The fourth year is 38 weeks (approximately 9.5 months) long and is partially structured and partially elective. Each student works with a faculty adviser to select the program best suited to the individual's abilities and goals. The rotations selected are subject to the approval of the Curriculum Committee and an Associate Dean in the Office of Student Services. Eight and one half (8.5) blocks (34 weeks) of fourth year rotations must be successfully completed in order to graduate. A block is defined as 4 weeks. Required rotations must be completed with WVU faculty on one of our campuses or at an approved RHEP site in West Virginia. Sixteen weeks of the fourth year are committed to required rotations. Students are limited to no more than 12 weeks of rotation time in the same subspecialty area. Research rotations must have prior approval of the Committee on Academic and Professional Standards. The remainder of the fourth year is elective and includes time for interviewing and vacation.

Surgical subspecialties will not fulfill this requirement), or
Pediatrics (available at Morgantown or Charleston campus), or
Family Medicine (available at Morgantown, Charleston, and Eastern Division campuses. Also available at UHC in Clarksburg and Wheeling Hospital). |

Two weeks of Anesthesiology and 2 weeks of one of the following; MICU, PICU, SICU, or NICU in Morgantown and Charleston. Eastern Division only offers MICU and Anesthesiology. These do not need to be consecutive. |
RHEP /

In an approved RHEP site in WV with a clinical faculty member. One month MUST be in a primary care discipline defined as Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn, or Emergency Medicine. The two 4-week blocks in RHEP do not need to be consecutive. |

Taken prior to the deadline for testing set by the Committee on Academic and Professional Standards or no credit will be given. If this time is not used prior to the test date, then students will be required to complete an additional 2-week elective to meet the graduation requirements. This time may not fall during one of the required rotations. |
