Department of Orthopaedics

Residency Program

Letter from the Chairman and Program Director

Sanford Emery, MDThe Department of Orthopaedics at West Virginia University continues the growth and development of its clinical, research and educational programs.  We have expanded to thirteen full-time faculty with expertise in all sub-specialties including musculoskeletal oncology and foot/ankle.  Several more recruitments are planned given our clinical volumes.  We have greatly increased the basic science and clinical research programs, focusing on outcomes database capability, tissue engineering and nanotechnology.

We have also established a resident research year for one of our three match positions. In fact, we have two separate match numbers now, one for two applicants in the regular clinical track of 1+4 years and one position for the resident research year in the lab following his or her internship, making this a six year spot (1+1+4 years). There is freedom in the lab year for that individual to design and carry out their own projects as well as participate in ongoing studies.

We have also initiated innovative educational opportunities such as the MBA Essentials program, in conjunction with the West Virginia University School of Business and Economics for our PGY3 residents. This is a 5-week course introducing professionals from all disciplines to the core material of a business school curriculum.

Yes, we have a lot going on! You will receive excellent clinical training in our program in an atmosphere of camaraderie amongst the residents and between the residents and faculty (if you don’t believe me, ask the residents…). We have some fun with basketball, softball, the spring dinner and annual resident-faculty golf outing, plus our annual roast. Morgantown is a beautiful small city in the mountains with a university atmosphere, that is one hour from Pittsburgh and three and one half hours from Washington DC.

We invite you to explore our website and contact us for more information.

Yours truly,

Sanford E. Emery, M.D., M.B.A
