Department of Otolaryngology

Residency Schedule

The WVU Otolaryngology Clinic is located in the Physician Office Center adjacent to West Virginia University (Ruby Memorial) Hospital.

  • PGY 1
    Three months are spent on rotation in Otolaryngology. One month is spent on each of the following four clinical areas: emergency medicine, critical care unit, anesthesia, and neurological surgery. Five months are spent in the general surgery disciplines including plastic surgery.

  • PGY 2
    Twelve months at University Hospital divided between team A (otology, general otolaryngology, facial plastics), team B (head and neck cancer) and team C (pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology). The teams alternate between the clinics and the operating rooms.

  • PGY 3
    This year includes a 4 month bench research rotation, 6 months divided between teams A, B and C, and a 2 month rotation to our Eastern Campus in Martinsburg where the resident spends time in a community hospital.

  • PGY 4
    Includes a 6 month rotation at the Clarksburg VA Hospital where the resident is in charge of the service and 6 months at West Virginia University Hospital where he/she serves as one of three chief residents.

  • PGY 5
    Serves as chief resident alternating between teams A, B and C. Performs most of the major cases.
