13 month-old boy with history of nausea and vomiting
Linh Vi, M.D., Jeffrey Stead, M.D., Sydney Schochet, M.D.
Gross description
The specimen consisted of multiple fragments of tan yellow and hemorrhagic tissue. The largest fragment (Fig. 2) measured 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.0 cm.
Microscopic description
H&E stained sections revealed a highly cellular neoplasm with cells arranged in sheets. Many of the neoplastic cells were small with moderate to scanty eosinophilic cytoplasm and round to oval hyperchromatic nuclei ( Fig 3). Several clusters contained rhabdoid cells with more abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm (Fig. 4). Mitotic figures were frequent. Small and large necrotic areas were present (Fig. 4). Occasional intervening fibrovascular septa were noted (Fig. 5). Mesenchymal fields and glandular components were also present.
