Case of the Month Sep 2002

A 56 year-old male with recurrent sinusitis, nasal congestion and epistaxis.

Jason C. Fowler, PA; Christopher Rassekh MD; Peilin Zhang MD

Microscopic Description

Routine hematoxylin and eosin sections revealed a non-keratinizing, poorly differentiated carcinoma. The tumor cells appeared as nests of cells with a syncytial-like growth pattern. In addition, there was a prominent lymphocytic response and associated tumor necrosis. Mitoses, although identified, were infrequent. The tumor cells also stained positive for pan-cytokeratin and negative for LCA and S-100. Unstained slides were sent out for EBV in-situ hybridization and were found to be strongly positive for EBV RNA.
