Case of the Month September 2003

A 25 yr.-old male with a large right neck mass

Jamey Friebe-Cost, MSIII; Peilin Zhang, MD; Jason C. Fowler, PA

Microscopic Examination

The predominant histological appearance of the resected tumor was a spindle cell proliferation with a fibromyxoid background and no recognizable growth pattern (Images 7, 8, 9 and 10). Minimal vascular proliferation was present, and mitotic figures were not seen. The tumor cells showed a strong positivity for vimentin, but were negative for S100, CD34, and smooth muscle actin staining. Also, the myxoid regions of the tumor demonstrated a weak positivity for Alcian blue.
