Case of the Month November 2005

A 35-year-od female with a right pneumothorax

Microscopic Description

 

Histologic sections demonstrated focal granulomatous inflammation with Langhans-type giant cells surrounded by lymphocytes, plasma cells and a few eosinophils (Figure 1). Round eosinophilic bodies with central clearing were scattered throughout the hematoxylin & eosin sections (Figure 2). PAS staining of these bodies was positive and revealed large spherule containing many endospores (Figure 3).
