Case of the Month October 2005
A 64 year old female with recurrent syncope.
Darren Harris M.D., Barbara Ducatman M.D.
Gross Findings:
The specimen received in pathology conisted of a segment of small bowel 13 cm in
length x 2.5 cm in diameter with a polypoid, tan-gray, 11 x 7 x 4 cm mass. The tumor extended from the serosal surface and surrounded the bowel wall in a near circumferential fashion. The bowel mucosa appeared tan-pink with normal folds and a
0.6 cm mucosal defect which extended into the tumor mass. The mucosal defect was 5.5 cm from the nearest end of the specimen. The cut-surface of the tumor was heterogenous with firm gray areas, soft, yellow tan areas, hemorrhagic, red-brown areas, and foci of calcifications. Dissection of the attached adipose tissue revealed eight lymph nodes up to 1.2 cm in greatest dimension.
