A 12 year old boy with a pineal region tumor

Microscopic Examination
Microscopic examination revealed polygonal neoplastic cells with large, vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. There was an accompanying lymphocytic infiltrate and areas of microcalcification (Fig. 1 and 2) were present. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the large polygonal cells were positive for placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) and negative for β-human chorionic growth factor (β-hCG) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) (not shown).
