Klingberg Neurodevelopmental Center
Attention Deficit Disorder Clinic
The Klingberg Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Clinic sees children who are ages 6 through 11 and experiencing difficulty with focus and attention. Once a referral has been received, we send questionnaires for both families and school personnel to complete. When this information is returned to our office, it is reviewed to determine whether it is appropriate to schedule the child to be seen in the ADD Clinic or whether other evaluations would better serve the needs to the child. If the child is determined to be appropriate for the ADD Clinic, then his or her parents will be contacted by mail with an appointment date and time. If it appears the child would be better served elsewhere, the family is contacted and more appropriate resources are provided to them.
ADD evaluations usually take approximately 2 hours. During this time our team will learn more about the child's medical, behavioral, social, and educational history. The child is observed as he or she spends time in the clinic setting. Frequently, children are asked to complete academic tasks on their grade level to informally assess their academic skills. If necessary, school personnel are contacted to learn more about the child's performance in school and clarify any supportive services that are being provided. The team will then provide diagnosis and feedback to the family about the findings of that visit, and make recommendations for further evaluation or treatment. Medication is an option which is discussed and prescribed by parental choice. If the child qualifies for a diagnosis of attention deficit disorder, the parents will be given an information packet which provides further information on the diagnosis, recommended books for parents and teachers, and educational rights and regulations.
A report is dictated and sent to the child's primary care provider as well as to the family. It is always suggested that the family share a copy of the report with school personnel. The report contains the diagnosis as well as recommendations for further assistance. If the child is started on medication, a follow-up appointment is recommended within one month.
