Pediatric Research Opportunities
STUDENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Competitive summer fellowships are offered to medical students following completion of their first year of training, sponsored by the WVU School of Medicine. Investigators throughout the University participate in this program with students spending 10-12 weeks in various laboratories actively engaged in ongoing research. In addition, efforts are made by our faculty to facilitate application of any student interested in securing a summer fellowship at institutions other than WVU, through the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society. WVU students have successfully competed for these fellowships in the past, which offer 10-12 week fellowships at a variety of institutions throughout the country. Clinical and basic research is recognized as an important component of training at all levels.
RESIDENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Department of Pediatrics residents are involved in a variety of academic activities related to research. Monthly journal clubs highlight recently published studies, presented for critical review. In addition, one grand rounds presentation each month focuses on research. Involvement in clinical and basic science research is recognized as a valuable component of resident training in the Department of Pediatrics. Opportunity for elective time to be devoted to research efforts is provided, and the inclusion of research related activity is encouraged. A variety of faculty are involved in research endeavors that encompass issues that impact children’s health, and involvement by interested residents is welcome.
