Combined Residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine
Our Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Program, the third oldest in the nation, was initiated in 1981 by 2 ambitious WVU students who wanted to pursue a career in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. From 1981 until 2006, the accreditation requirements for a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Program were simply to be supervised by an accredited Pediatrics Program and an accredited Internal Medicine Program, as WVU's programs are. In 2006, the ACGME began to individually accredit Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Programs, requiring each program to submit a Program Information Form (PIF) to the ACGME for review by a Residency Review Committee (RRC). At that time, a decision was made based on the PIF whether or not to accredit the combined program and when to site visit them. The West Virginia University Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program received accreditation in July of 2006, with a site visit scheduled for Fall of 2008. Our initial accreditation cycle is for 2 years.
Our program provides excellent training in the fields of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and allows for the growth and development of clinicians who will care for patients of all ages. Many career opportunities exist, from community practice to academics; primary care or any of the more than 20 fellowship opportunities.
