Department of Physiology and Pharmacology
Pharmacology and Toxicology Graduate Programs
Pharmacology is a basic science involved in understanding how drugs alter cell function, in order to develop ideal agents which prevent, minimize or cure diseases. Toxicology is a basic science involved in understanding how drugs and other agents cause adverse effects in cells and organisms. Both disciplines involve hypothesis-driven research undertaken at many levels, ranging from an understanding of the effects of agents at a molecular level to a description of the actions of agents in models of human disease, and, finally, to the evaluation of the effectiveness of agents in humans. The Pharmacology and Toxicology Training Program in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology prepares students for research careers in pharmacology and toxicology. The emphasis of training in pharmacology and toxicology at West Virginia University has been the awarding of the Ph.D. degree. The program has been recognized repeatedly for its excellence and for the depth and breadth of its training. One hundred twenty nine Ph.D. degrees have been awarded. Graduates of the program have readily obtained postdoctoral research training and developed satisfying careers in academic medicine, industry and government. Among the graduates, eight hold or have held Departmental Chairs, and many are or have been industrial Department heads and University Vice-Presidents.
