The WVU Department of Radiology was established in 1960 under Harold Amory. The department was focused on clinical service and education in the early years. In 1965, the Radiologic Technology Education Program opened to train diagnostic and radiation therapy technologists. In 1972 under Orlando Gabriele’s leadership, WVU acquired ultrasound, digital subtraction angiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In 1992, Dr. Mathis Frick accepted the Orlando Gabriele Chair of Radiology. Under his leadership, the first Positron Emission Tomography (PET) program in West Virginia began with a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy; research continued to grow. Clinical services have expanded also and today the department includes 24 radiologists, 6 Ph.D. scientists, and 16 residents. Research and clinical MRI & PET/CT are performed in the Center for Advanced Imaging. Diagnostic and Interventional Angiography, Nuclear Medicine, CT, Fluoroscopy, and X-ray imaging are performed in the WVU hospital part of the department.
