2008 E. J. Van Liere Convocation and Research Day

The annual Health Sciences Van Liere Memorial Convocation and Research Day will be held on Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23. All students, faculty and clinical fellows are invited to submit an abstract for a Research Day poster presentation. Ten student abstracts, representative of the training programs in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing will be selected by the Van Liere/Research Day Committee for oral presentation at the Van Liere Memorial Convocation. Students selected to give oral presentations may also choose to give a poster presentation on Research Day.

Both oral and student poster presentations will be judged for awards. Oral presentations will be judged by the Van Liere/Research Day Committee, and a $500 1st place, $400 2nd place and $300 3rd place award will be given. An additional travel award will be given to the 1st and 2nd place winners. All others selected to give oral presentations will receive a $100 award. Research Day posters will be grouped into categories for judging, such as Basic Science, Clinical Research, Population Based Research and Health Services Research. Posters will be judged by faculty teams that include representatives from the different training programs. A $500 1st place and $250 2nd place award will be given for each judging category. To allow more individual student winners, the 1st and 2nd place oral award winners will be excluded from the poster awards.

Early submission is encouraged since the poster presentation venue may limit the number of abstracts that can be accepted. The abstract should state the objective of the study and/or the hypothesis being tested, the methods used, the data obtained, the conclusions and the relevance of the studies to human health. Student abstracts should represent their own efforts, but students are encouraged to ask their advisor to review abstract organization, data interpretation and conclusions.

Any questions regarding the Van Liere Memorial Convocation, Research Day or abstract submission should be directed to Paul Gordon , Chair, Van Liere Convocation/Research Day Committee at pgordon@hsc.wvu.edu, or to any member of the Committee.

Abstract are to be submitted on-line before March 17th at 5:00pm.
