Curriculum and Research
During Years 1 and 2, you will take the integrated medical school basic science curriculum and actively participate in a monthly research forum for all students in the MD/PhD program. During the summer periods before and after the first year of medical school, you will complete rotations in two research laboratories to facilitate the final selection of a research mentor and specific graduate program.
After successful completion of Years 1 and 2 of medical school and posting a passing score on step 1 of the USMLE, you will enter the Ph.D. research portion of your training. Research opportunities are numerous and include cell and molecular biology, integrative physiology, immunology, exercise physiology, cardiovascular sciences, receptor biochemistry, bacterial pathogenesis, lung cell biology, inflammation, molecular genetics, pharmacological sciences, neuroendocrine and reproductive biology, developmental biology, cancer cell biology, neurosciences and outcomes and epidemiology-based studies in public health. Research training is supervised by graduate faculty from basic science, public health, and clinical departments, with appointments in one of eight graduate programs: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cancer Cell Biology; Cellular and Integrative Physiology; Exercise Physiology; Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis; Neuroscience; Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences; and Public Health Sciences.
Individual programs may be contacted for specific requirements. After the writing and successful defense of the doctoral dissertation, you will complete Years 3 and 4 of medical school.
