Rural Medicine/Rural Health Training
The higher education policy commission in West Virginia requires all students enrolled in a state supported health professions program to complete rotations and clerkships in rural underserved communities in the state. The WVU School of Medicine is committed to this training and service to these communities as a part of our social contract with the people of the state. These one month rotations are in the third and fourth year and students may select from a variety of clerkships in primary care including family medicine, emergency medicine, med-peds, general pediatrics, and some general surgery. Students also engage in service-learning and/or community based research projects around public health issues while on these required clinical rotations, and students may develop health promotion activities as part of an interdisciplinary team. The goal of this community based training component is to increase the number of West Virginia trained health professionals in practice in rural areas of the state.
