West Virginia State Medical Association --
Medical Student Section Student Chapter of the
American Medical Association (AMA)

2008 Region 5 Meeting

"How the AMA Can Benefit Medical Students"
- Nancy Nielson, MD.

Chapter Meetings: Meetings are held monthly, and classes will receive emails about upcoming meetings.

Topics include school related issues such as hints & tips for WVU classes, preparing for USMLE exams, and local service projects as well as issues pertaining to all medical students like increasing student debt, student & resident work hours, local, state, & national elections, medical liability reform, and national health care, to name a few. Specific meeting topics are included in monthly meeting notices.

Meetings topics are recommended by the chapter members and decided upon and planned by the officers. If you have a suggestion for a meeting topic, please contact one of the officers.

State & National Meetings: Every January, during MLK weekend, is WVSMA’s midwinter conference. AMA will send out another email when we learn more about the events over the weekend; however the important day is White Coat Day on Monday. This is a day when the physicians from across the state gather at the Capitol building in Charleston to assert ourselves and lobby for the health care of West Virginia. This is the most important event for us, as medical students, to attend as we represent the future of health care in our state. We continue to fight the battles of solidifying legislative reforms and push for new initiatives regarding health and health-related issues in our state. Even if you are not a member of the AMA, we would encourage you to attend. AMA will be sending out emails as the event nears to give you more information, but please put this on your calendar.

The interim meeting conference for AMA-MSS is held every fall at a different location each year. If anyone is interested in attending this meeting let one of the officers know and we will help you get registered and try to locate possible funding for the event.

Our Region V meeting (AMA-MSS chapters from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia) is in February or March each year and is hosted by one of the region’s medical school chapters.

The Annual Meeting for the AMA-MSS coincides with the full AMA House of Delegates annual meeting and is the 2nd weekend in June at AMA’s home office location of Chicago. WVSMA and Monongalia County Medical Society provide full financial support for our delegates to attend.

Chapter By Laws: Defines the purpose and mission, along with chapter governance.

Service Projects: Run for Cover (in cooperation with AMWA); Toys for Tots

Advocacy and Policy: Resolutions for policy adoption may be proposed by any member of the AMA-MSS. There is always a need for involvement of medical students in helping our organization with policy development and advocacy of our issues. If you would like to discuss an issue or propose a resolution please feel free to contact one of the officers.
